I’m a hot sleeper by nature, and I once went through a phase where I was convinced the answer was just “a better mattress.” One that offers less pressure on my shoulders, has better support, and doesn’t trap heat the way older foam beds tend to.
After a lot of research and consideration, that’s how I ended up looking at the Purple mattress. Having tried it, I can confirm that it’s absolutely comfortable, but I was still waking up rather hot and sweaty in the early hours of the morning. Not as much as before, but enough that I kept looking for a better solution.
So then, I tried the Eight Sleep Pod, a temperature-controlled mattress cover that fits over your existing bed and actively heats or cools each side throughout the night. Purple had already solved the pressure and support side of things reasonably well, but what was still waking me up at 2 AM was the slow, creeping warmth that builds up over a few hours of sleep and pulls you out of a deep rest before you ever realize what’s happening. Eight Sleep promised to address exactly that, and unlike Purple, it wasn’t asking me to swap out my whole sleep surface.
To be clear, these are two very different products, and this isn’t your standard mattress comparison. Instead, it’s more of a look at which product solves which problem, when you should choose one over the other, and when you might consider splurging on both.

Comfort and Pressure Relief
The Purple mattress’ GelFlex Grid is markedly different from foam or traditional hybrids. It flexes under pressure points like shoulders and hips while staying supportive under the rest of your body. The first time you lie on it, it feels a bit strange (almost like it’s giving way more than it should), and then your body kind of settles into it.
There’s a reason it’s often recommended for pain relief; it’s especially good if you deal with pressure points or wake up sore. It distributes your weight really evenly and doesn’t create those “stuck” spots you get with memory foam.
The Eight Sleep cover doesn’t replace your mattress or change its structure in a meaningful way. It’s a rather stiff layer, but it tends to blend right into your current mattress and not alter the feel all that much. This means that you shouldn’t sleep any differently with the Eight Sleep installed; any discrepancies from your normal setup should disappear after a few nights.
Temperature Control
Purple does a solid job of staying temperature-neutral. The Grid design allows for optimal airflow, and the material itself doesn’t trap heat the way foam can. You’re less likely to overheat compared to a traditional mattress, and for a lot of sleepers, that’s enough.
Eight Sleep, on the other hand, actively controls the temperature of your bed throughout the night, adjusting between 55°F and 110°F based on your preferences and sleep stages. This adjustment is also continuous; it monitors the temperature throughout the night and constantly tweaks it.
This way, you’re not waking up because your temperature shifted in the middle of the night; it removes that whole cycle of getting too warm, adjusting, and half-waking.
Long-Term Benefits
Once you’re used to the Purple mattress, it stays the same; you get a relatively stable experience night after night. If your sleep issues are mostly physical (pressure, alignment, or discomfort) and the Purple mattress helps at all, that consistency is exactly what you want.
Eight Sleep is less static. The system adapts based on your sleep patterns, environment, and behavior over time. It learns what temperatures work best, when you tend to wake up, and how your body responds, and it adjusts automatically through Autopilot. So instead of hoping you got it right once, it keeps refining things in the background.
Sleep Disruptions
Because the Purple mattress relieves pressure and supports your body properly, you tend to move less; you’re not constantly adjusting to get comfortable, which can translate to fewer interruptions during the night. The GelFlex Grid also absorbs energy and limits motion transfer, which means it’s quite effective for minimizing disruptions caused by a stirring partner or pet.
The Eight Sleep Pod looks at other factors — temperature shifts, snoring, subtle restlessness — and actively works to prevent those things from happening in the first place. If you’re routinely stirring when the temperature reaches a certain point, it adjusts accordingly. If your snoring is caused by airway troubles, the system can elevate your head to alleviate it. It’s also worth noting that it solves another problem that’s common among couples who sleep together; with dual-zone temperature support, you won’t need to fight over whether the bed should be warmer or cooler.
Setup and Maintenance
Purple is about as low-effort as a mattress can be. You unbox it, let it expand over a few hours, put your sheets on, and you’re done. There’s nothing to configure, no app to download, and no ongoing upkeep beyond rotating it occasionally.
Eight Sleep is a different story. The initial setup involves fitting the cover over your mattress, connecting the hardware, pairing it to your network, and other steps. The ongoing maintenance is also rather involved, including refilling the system and replacing inserts to maintain water quality. None of it is particularly hard, but it’s worth knowing that it’s a device you maintain, not just something you sleep on.
Additional Features
Eight Sleep adds a layer of visibility you don’t usually get from a traditional mattress. The Pod tracks metrics like heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, and sleep stages, then uses that data to adjust your environment over time.
Purple’s extras are practical. The mattress transfers very little motion across the sleep surface, which matters a lot if you share a bed since you’re less likely to feel your partner shifting around. The GelFlex Grid is made from hyper-elastic polymer, designed to stretch and bounce back repeatedly, which is why Purple backs it with a 10-year warranty. There’s also a 100-night sleep trial baked in. Beyond that, it’s a pretty clean experience — no app, no subscription, nothing to configure.
In short, Purple improves how sleep feels, and Eight Sleep helps you understand and improve how it actually performs.
Eight Sleep vs. Purple Mattress: Choosing One (or Both)
Purple is a really good mattress; it’s comfortable, supportive, and solves a very real problem for people dealing with pressure points or pain. If that’s what’s been bothering you, it can feel like a big upgrade almost immediately. It’s also one of the few mattresses that actually feels different in a meaningful way — the whole GelFlex Grid is about reducing pressure without sacrificing support, so you don’t wake up sore or stiff. For the right person, this distinct experience is enough to improve sleep on its own.
Eight Sleep is doing something much broader. It leaves your mattress’ job to your mattress and focuses on everything else: temperature, snoring, and uneven sleep. It’s great if your sleep issues show up later (waking up warm, restless, or just not feeling fully rested), rather than any discomfort with getting to sleep in the first place.
That’s why these two products don’t quite sit in the same category. One improves the surface you sleep on, while the other changes the environment you sleep in.
It’s also why you don’t need to choose between a Purple mattress and the Eight Sleep system. The Eight Sleep Pod sits on top of your mattress, which means you can use it with a Purple mattress (or any other mattress) without changing the underlying feel.
This combination makes a lot of sense.
- The Purple mattress handles pressure relief and support
- Eight Sleep handles temperature, tracking, and adjustments
So if you already like how Purple feels but still notice you’re waking up too warm or not sleeping as deeply as you’d expect, layering Eight Sleep on top bridges that gap. You may have already upgraded your mattress, but perhaps upgrading what happens during the night is the best next step for you.
