Is a Helix Mattress Worth It? My Long-Term Review and Verdict

Is a Helix Mattress Worth It? My Long-Term Review and Verdict

Since you’re reading this article, I’m willing to bet you’re already pretty deep into your own research and wondering whether a Helix mattress is actually worth the money. After sleeping on the Midnight Luxe for quite a while, my answer is yes. Without hesitation.

That doesn’t mean Helix is the perfect mattress for everyone, however. No mattress on earth is. But after sleeping on one every night, I think Helix delivers one of the best price-to-performance ratios in the online mattress market.

Things to Know About Helix Mattresses

  • Helix carries budget-friendly mattresses called the Core Collection. However, the Luxe and Elite collections from Helix offer premium features at a lower price than many luxury competitors.
  • There are several Helix models to choose from based on your preferred sleep position and firmness needs, and a 120-night sleep trial is standard with every mattress (up to two free returns per household) with a limited lifetime warranty for protection against defects in the workmanship and materials.
  • Mattresses from Helix have a hybrid design with foam layers near the top and coils toward the bottom for support.
  • Mattresses from Helix arrive compressed in a box, expanding within a couple hours after setup; once expanded, you cannot tell the mattress was ever in a box (seriously).

If you’re looking for a supportive hybrid mattress that’s comfortable, well-made, and less expensive than brands like Tempur-Pedic, Helix is absolutely worth considering.

Why I Think Helix is Worth It

Is a Helix Mattress Worth It

There are a lot of mattress companies out there, and they make a lot of promises: better sleep, premium materials, hotel-quality comfort. You can get lost in the marketing noise, and after a while, they all start sounding pretty similar to one another.

What convinced me that Helix was different wasn’t the marketing, as much as it was the value. Here’s why I think Helix more than earns its price tag.

Excellent balance of comfort and support. The hybrid construction Helix uses combines individually wrapped coils with multiple layers of foam. That creates just the right amount of cushioning for pressure relief and comfort, without the “deep-sink” stuck-in-the-bed feeling that memory foam mattresses typically have.

Less heat retention during the night. This is another major benefit of hybrid mattress construction, in general. Memory foam mattresses are notorious for sleeping hot; I used to have one, myself, and while it was fine during the winter months, it didn’t matter what kind of sheets I had on it during the summer. It absorbed and held my body heat like a sponge. Hybrid mattresses allow air to flow through the materials a lot easier, which reduces the amount of heat they retain so you can sleep a little cooler at night.

No one-size-fits-all approach to sleep. This is one of Helix’s biggest advantages. Whether you’re a side sleeper, back sleeper, stomach sleeper, toss-and-turner, heavier sleeper, or someone who sleeps hot, there’s a Helix model designed specifically for those needs.

Premium feel without a luxury price tag. Helix isn’t what I’d call “cheap,” but it’s nowhere near the cost of many traditional luxury mattress brands. The Luxe collection, in particular, feels comparable to mattresses that cost several thousand dollars more in retail stores.

Policies that reduce your risk. A generous 120-night sleep trial makes it much easier to spend over $1,000 on a mattress because if it doesn’t work for you, you’re not stuck with an expensive mistake for the next however-many years.

Is a Helix Mattress Expensive?

helix site

It can be, but the answer really depends on what you’re comparing it to. If you’re weighing a Helix against budget mattresses from Amazon or warehouse clubs, then yes, it is on the expensive side.

Compared to premium mattresses from brands like Saatva, Tempur-Pedic, or Stearns & Foster, however, Helix is actually fairly priced.

Here’s roughly where each collection falls:

Collec-
tion
Retail Queen PriceBest For
Core~$1,400Budget-conscious shoppers
Luxe~$2,400Most value-minded shoppers wanting premium comfort
Elite~$4,300Luxury shoppers

Helix runs promotions almost constantly, so very few people actually pay full retail price.

When you compare the materials, construction, customization options, sleep trial, and warranty, I think the Luxe collection offers the best overall value. (Although the Elite collection is a thing of beauty, if you can swing it.)

My Experience Sleeping on a Helix Mattress

helix mattress review

My husband is primarily a side and back sleeper, while I mostly sleep on my stomach and side, so finding one mattress that works well for both of us hasn’t always been easy.

The Midnight Luxe from Helix has been one of the very few mattresses we’ve both genuinely enjoyed. (He’s enjoying it right now, in fact… as I write this, he’s asleep on his side of the bed. I’m a night owl, what can I say.)

For him, especially, the pressure relief at the shoulder and hip is a big part of the reason why we love this mattress so much. Your body is cushioned and cradled, but you don’t feel like you’re sinking deeply into the mattress. Whether you’re on your side or your back, your spine stays comfortably aligned.

The motion isolation is actually really good for a mattress that has coils. Our last mattress was a memory foam, and to be honest, the motion isolation was a little better with that one. But given that it was slowly killing his back… I think being able to feel him move around a little more during the night is a small price to pay.

Of all the mattresses we tested out when we were shopping, the Helix Midnight Luxe has the best edge support. My husband often sits on the edge of the bed, but I have a tendency to sleep near the edge like a mountain goat teetering on the edge of a cliff. (Part of that is a comfort thing, but I think on some level, I’m also trying to escape his snoring. Alas, there is no escape.)

Whether you’re sitting or lying along the edge of the mattress, you don’t feel like you’re going to roll or slide off of it, which means the entire surface of the mattress is usable from edge to edge.

And after sleeping on it long-term, it still feels as supportive as it was when it was brand new, and it hasn’t developed body impressions or sagging. That said, we do periodically rotate the mattress (which you’re supposed to do), generally once every four months or so.

We opted to get the optional GlacioTex Cooling Cover with our Helix, which draws heat away from the mattress surface so you can sleep cooler. I’m in menopause, so I can use all the help I can get in that regard. The surface doesn’t stay cold all night (it won’t actively cool like sleep tech can), but it also doesn’t roast me in my own body heat, either. It’ll get warm over time, but never hot, and that’s leaps and bounds better over our old memory foam mattress.

Buying a Helix Mattress (What to Expect)

Buying directly from Helix is pretty straightforward and done online, although you can also purchase directly from select retailers if you have one nearby. The mattress ships free in a surprisingly compact box (although it is heavy!), typically arriving within a week or two, depending on inventory and your location.

My Helix was delivered through FedEx, and we used a dolly to get it inside and up to our second-floor bedroom. From there, you’ll unbox it, remove the plastic wrapping, and let it expand. It’s a good idea to give it a few hours to fully expand; by the time we went to bed that first night, it had about nine hours to expand and settle.

There was a very faint “new mattress” smell immediately after opening the plastic, but it disappeared quickly, and by the time we went to bed, there was no odor at all. Which I was glad about… my husband has a ridiculously sensitive nose. Given that it was winter when our mattress was delivered, the bedroom windows remained closed the entire time. I detected nothing (as usual), but neither did he (which surprised me, to be honest).

How the Helix Sleep Trial Makes the Decision Easier

One of the biggest reasons I recommend Helix is the generous trial period: you get 120 nights to decide whether the mattress is right for you.

Helix recommends sleeping on it for at least 30 nights before making a decision, since your body often needs time to adjust to a new mattress (and there is a bit of a breaking-in period with any new mattress). If you ultimately decide it isn’t the right fit, however, Helix will work with you on a free return during the trial period.

This policy removes a lot of the risk that comes with buying a mattress online.

One thing I think is really important to mention is that if you purchase a Helix mattress from a local retailer (in person), you’ll want to make sure they honor the trial period. Individual retailers can (and often do) have their own policies that are independent of Helix.

Who Should Skip Helix?

As much as I personally like Helix, it isn’t necessarily the best choice for everyone. You may want to consider another mattress brand if:

  • You’re shopping on a very tight budget.
  • You strongly prefer the slow, deep sink of an all-memory-foam mattress.
  • You prefer testing mattresses extensively in local stores before buying. Helix is carried at select retailers, but that may not be a feasible option depending on where you live.

Final Verdict: Is Helix Worth It?

helix site

For most people, yes, a Helix mattress is worth it. The combination of quality materials, thoughtful construction and model selection, generous sleep trial, and consistently positive owner experiences makes Helix one of the strongest values in the hybrid mattress category.

After sleeping on the Helix Midnight Luxe for a long time now, I understand why the brand has developed such a loyal following. It’s well-built, supports different sleep positions comfortably, and delivers a premium sleep experience without reaching the price point of many luxury competitors.

It may not be the cheapest mattress you can buy, but it’s one of the few that feels like you’re getting exactly what you paid for, and then some.
