Plushbeds Botanical Bliss vs Zenhaven? Which is Best?

Latex is a material that often emits a traditional vibe. How many times have you heard people saying “They don’t make this like they used to”? With latex mattresses, they’re even better than they used to be. Considered the most durable and responsive materials that are used in the construction of a mattress, latex comes from rubber trees and can be used to create mattresses of different firmness levels. Aside from being responsive, latex also runs cool and provides a great deal of breathability, not to mention that it makes it very easy to move around in your sleep, because it doesn’t provide the same level of sinkage as a foam mattress does. That’s why today, we are going to focus on two of the best latex mattresses currently found on the market: Plushbeds Botanical Bliss vs Zenhaven. Which is better?

Botanical Bliss® Organic Latex Mattress

The first one on our list is the Botanical Bliss® Organic Latex Mattress. Available in a 9, 10 and 12-inch model, this mattress can basically cover any firmness preference due to the three (or four, depending on the mattress’ thickness) layers of latex that come in three different firmness options. These layers can be placed according to your personal preference to change the firmness of the mattress. As you will come to understand from the review below, the Botanical Bliss® allows the sleeper to unzip the cover, expose all three (or four) latex layers and switch them around until the desired firmness is achieved. Basically, each of the two possible purchasing options renders six different firmness possibilities.

The Zenhaven mattress is a very strong competitor, with features that are similar, but not identical to the ones found on the Botanical Bliss® product. The mattress is made with Talalay latex with a reversible design. One side of the mattress has a plush top, while the other side is gentle firm. It’s like getting two different products in a single package. Aside from the flippable feature, the mattress also provides good support for different types of sleepers, as well the bounciness that we’ve all come to appreciate in a latex mattress.

Botanical Bliss® Organic Latex Mattress Features

The construction and firmness of the Botanical Bliss® Organic Latex Mattress are very dependent on one another. Even if the constructions are similar, there are some added layers depending on the firmness and the thickness of the mattress chosen. The first thing that needs to be mentioned is that you can choose the height for your mattress, out of three available options: 9, 10 and 12 inches. The next important thing that you need to know is that the Botanical Bliss® Organic Latex Mattress is characterized by the three layers of Dunlop latex, each of them with a different firmness level.

If you opt for the medium configuration, you will receive a soft, a medium and a firm latex layer, which is added inside the mattress in the order of your choice. Opting for the firmer mattress, the layers will be medium, firm and extra firm. What this does is allow you to customize the firmness of your mattress, leading to a total of six different configurations for the medium and the firm options. Here is what you can expect construction-wise from the three different mattress height options:

  • The 9-inch mattress is constructed with three layers of latex, the one on top measuring 2 inches and the other two layer measuring 3 inches each.
  • The 10-inch mattress adds an extra inch the first layer, resulting in three identical layers of latex.
  • The 12-inch version brings one more layer of latex into the equation, which adds 2 extra inches to the total height of the mattress.

Cover – Organic Cotton & Wool

The soft cover of the mattress is made from an organic cover that goes on top another thin layer of New Zealand wool. Each of these two materials fulfills very specific roles. The organic cotton is here to absorb moisture and keep your skin cool during the night. Its hypoallergenic properties are backed up by the sustainable growth of the fabric, since no pesticides or herbicides are ever used. The Organic New Zealand wool layer regulates temperature and provides soothing support for just about any type of sleeper.

Organic Dunlop Latex Layers

The following three layers are entirely made up from Dunlop organic latex. Being a customer favorite because of its high-responsiveness and the ability to quickly recover from under body pressure, latex is a material that creates bounciness. This particular feature is a delight to sleepers who are reminiscent of the bounciness of traditional mattresses. While it doesn’t provide the same contouring as memory foam, latex will help you sleep cool and support your movement during the night, if you are a fussy sleeper. Depending on the firmness of the first of the three layers, the mattress could provide some sinkage or none at all.

In terms of firmness, Botanical Bliss® Organic Latex Mattress has developed a very clever system to cater to the needs of a wide range of customers. The three layers of Dunlop latex are labels as soft, medium and firm and the sleeper can arrange them in any particular order to obtain the much-needed firmness of his choice. The manufacturer’s website provides detailed graphics and tables that explain the various configurations and construction for each level of firmness.

Let’s assume that your desired configuration is having the soft latex layer on top, followed by the medium and then the firm one. First off, always remember that people of different weights will feel the firmness of a mattress differently. On a general note, the different combinations between the soft, medium and firm layers have a firmness rating that varies from 5 to 7 (10 being the highest level of firmness in a mattress). With the softest layer of latex on top, you will immediately feel the latex layers pushing back as you apply pressure on them.

In case you opt for the firm mattress option, with the medium, firm and extra firm layers of latex, the firmness rating will vary in between 7 and 9.

The minute you lie back on the Botanical Bliss® Organic Latex Mattress, you can really feel yourself sinking into the bed (if you have the softest layer placed on top, that is). The soft latex foam takes the shape of your lumbar area and provides quite a surprising amount of support. The ability to switch positions is very easy, due to the bounciness of the latex, which also facilitates getting in and out of bed. As far as edge support is concerned, we expected it to be more solid. As you move closer to the edge of the bed, you won’t actually feel like you’re rolling off it, but the mattress does sink in a bit. If you are a side sleeper, it is definitely recommended to place the softest layer of latex on top. This will help your shoulders and hips sink into the mattress and alleviate these common pressure points. If you’re a fan of sleeping on your stomach, you will need a firmer layer of the top, as to avoid keeping your spine in the wrong alignment.

Unique Features

Certified Arpico Dunlop Latex

Nobody wants to spend their time in bed sleeping on a mattress that’s made from materials rich in chemicals. The certified Arpico Dunlop latex that’s used in the construction of this mattress wasn’t grown with any pesticides or fertilizers. It doesn’t contain any chemicals or dyes and doesn’t have any carcinogenic adhesives.

Certified Organic Cover

Since everything about the Botanical Bliss® Organic Latex Mattress is organic, the top layers respect this pattern as well. The cotton that’s used in the cover of the mattress is the USA sourced and naturally grown to avoid the use of pesticides and herbicides. It works together with the layer of New Zealand wool to make sure that body temperature is regulated and the sleeper is comfortable no matter the room temperature. Thanks to the moisture absorbing properties and hypoallergenic features of this combo, the Botanical Bliss® mattress is perfect for people who like to sleep in an organic environment.

Zenhaven Mattress

The Zenhaven mattress is 10 inches tall and made out of fours different layers of latex. One of its best features is the fact that it’s flippable, but we’ll talk more about that later.

Cover – Organic Cotton

It’s a pretty common trend for mattresses to have organic covers nowadays and the Zenhaven makes no exception. The organic cotton is quilted with wool, providing us with a moisture-wicking combination of materials that very pleasant to the touch, but also has cooling properties.

Comfort Layer – Luxury Plush

As we’ve mentioned before, the mattress can be flipped and each of its sides has a different firmness level. We’re going to present the luxury plush layer as being the top one, a setup which is good for those who prefer sleeping on a softer mattress. This layer is 1.5 inches thick and it’s made of Talalay latex. As you lie down on the mattress, you will feel a slight sinking into the surface because this layer is very soft.

Compression Layer – Talalay latex

Next in line comes another 3-inch layer of Talalay latex, with a very good bounce and support for your body. This layer provides the much-needed response that we’d like to see in all mattresses, as it facilitates movement during the night, allowing the sleeper to get in and out of bed with ease, but also to switch positions without the feel of sinking into the mattress.

Transition Layer – More Talalay Latex

If you’ve followed our configuration and have the mattress with the plush side up, then this layer will be the transition one. Additionally, if your mattress is flipped the other way, this is the layer that provides firmness for those who prefer such a mattress.

Foundation Layer – Sturdy Base

Following our orientation, this layer measures 1.5 inches in thickness and it’s made with gentle, but firm latex. It can act both as a base or, if you flip the mattress over, it provides support for those looking for a firm mattress.

As you can imagine, each side of the mattress has a different firmness and provides different benefits for the sleeper. If you leave the plush side on top and press against the mattress, you will feel your hand sinking in. this side is great for side sleepers who don’t wake to wake up with shoulder pains because the top layer of the mattress is too firm. Alternatively, you can flip the mattress over and have the firmer layer on top. If you apply the same amount of pressure as you did for the plush side, you will notice there’s isn’t that much sinkage and this side has a lot more bounce. This automatically means that motion transfer is better on this firmer side. Even so, the bounce is good on both sides of the mattress. With the plush side up, the firmness rating would be around 4, while the firmer side has a firmness rating that’s a solid 7.5.

The way the mattress feels when you rest upon it depends on three different factors: your weight, your favorite sleeping position and which side of the mattress you’re sitting on. If you lie on your back on the plus side, you won’t feel any disturbing pressure points. There is a slight sinkage, but that’s normal when you’re sitting on a soft mattress. The firm side is a better choice for back sleepers, allowing easy movement and not that much pressure.

Surprisingly enough, sleeping on the side on the plush top isn’t as comfortable as expected, as pressure points are visible in the shoulders and hips area. This problem won’t be solved by sleeping on the firmer side either, which leads us to conclude that the construction of the mattress isn’t right for people who spend most of their nights sleeping on the side. Both the plush and the firm side are really great for a stomach sleeper. While each of the sides will apply slight pressure on the body, it should still provide all the comfort needed to get a good night’s sleep.

Unique Features

Dual-sided Mattress

One of the unique features of the Zenhaven mattressZenhaven mattress is that you get two different products in a single one. Picture the construction of the mattress as a sandwich. In between the 1.5 inch layers that go on the top and bottom of the mattress, you have two more layers of Talalay latex, measuring 3 inches in thickness each. One side of the mattress is plushier, while the other side is firmer. This allows you to flit the mattress over whenever you feel like sleeping on a different level of firmness.

Which Is Better?

The correct way to evaluate which of the two mattresses is better, you’d have to figure out what is more important for you when you’re out shopping for a new mattress. The mattresses are similar in terms of features, in the sense that they use similar materials and have latex cores, with the possibility of picking your desired firmness option. The Botanical Bliss® Organic Latex Mattress is more focused on providing an organic and natural product for those looking to remove all possible chemicals and allergy triggers from their homes. It is also more customizable in terms of firmness, because of the three layers of latex that can be placed one on top of the other to cover a wider range of preferences.

TheZenhaven mattress, on the other hand, is flippable, which basically means that you’re getting two mattresses instead of one. The construction of the mattress provides comfort and support for each of the two sides. Both of these mattresses come with 20 and 25 years of warranty respectively and a generous number of free nights to try out the product and return it free of charge in case you find out it’s not what you were looking for.

Both the Zenhaven and the Botanical Bliss® Organic Latex Mattress are high-quality products that have the satisfaction and comfort of the end user in mind. While they are both working to deliver great comfort for the sleeper, they’ve focused on allowing people to customize the mattress to the desired level of firmness, but each one in a different manner. The Botanical Bliss® Organic Latex Mattress allows for a higher level of customization, but theZenhavenmodel is plushier and better for those looking to have a very soft mattress. It all comes down to your preferred level of firmness because both mattresses are just as good.
