Eight Sleep vs. Helix: Traditional Mattress, Sleep System, or Both?

Eight Sleep vs. Helix: Traditional Mattress, Sleep System, or Both?

My deep dive into this started with me just trying to replace my mattress. So, of course, I just looked at brands like Helix at first. I took the quizzes, scrolled through the models, and ended up going with the Midnight Luxe, plus the GlacioTex cover since I sleep pretty hot.

To my delight, the mattress was very comfortable and definitely helped my sleep overall. But despite the extra cooling cover, I was still waking up hot at all hours of the night. That’s how I learned about Eight Sleep; I could tell that the GlacioTex cover was helping a bit (and definitely made it more comfortable to fall asleep), but I was looking for a cover to take it even further if at all possible.

Eight Sleep is not a mattress; it’s a smart cover. It feels a bit odd to lump it in with the Helix and compare the two, but for hot sleepers specifically who are drawn to a mattress like the Midnight Luxe that boasts fancy cooling features, it’s an important conversation to have. Because at the end of the day, a mattress can only do so much to keep you cool.

And I’m glad I went down this rabbit hole. I went looking for something that could keep me cool and instead found an entire sleep system that adjusted my environment automatically, gave me loads of data to help me see where I could still improve, and even helped my snoring issue.

So let’s compare two incomparable products and talk about what each one does and does not do, when you’d want one over the other, and when you might even get both.

Helix: Fixing the Foundation (and Doing It Well)

Helix takes a very personalized approach to selling their mattresses. They don’t push one “best” option; they help you match your sleep habits to the best mattress for you — whether your current mattress is too old, too soft, too firm, or just doesn’t give you enough support where it matters. It feels considered, which is already a big step up from guessing based on reviews and product descriptions.

I will say that there’s a certain pressure to get things right with the quiz, and you start second-guessing things you’ve never really thought about before: Am I actually a side sleeper, or do I just fall asleep that way? Do I need more pressure relief, or just a better pillow?

If you’re an overthinker like me, this can be a huge sticking point. I solved this by taking a few days to really think about how I’m sleeping (and asking my partner to do the same). The three-month trial period definitely eased my mind here, but I ended up not needing it for my Midnight Luxe. Whether I lucked out or just did a great job with my homework, I’m still not sure.

For context, again, I ended up getting the Midnight Luxe. Your exact experience will likely vary a bit, but a lot of what I noticed echoes what I’ve heard across the broader Helix community.

The first thing I noticed was that I was getting more support where my hips drop, a bit of give where my shoulders need it, and enough responsiveness that I don’t feel stuck when I move. If you’ve ever slept on something that almost works but still has you shifting around trying to settle, this is the kind of upgrade that fixes that quickly.

This helps more than it seems like it would. I toss less, which means fewer micro wake-ups. My alignment has improved, so I’m not waking up sore as often. The surface feels more stable, so if my partner moves, it’s less noticeable.

You can get these kinds of benefits with any high-quality mattress, as far as I know. But I think it’d take a lot longer to find that mattress without the benefit of Helix’s hyper-personalized approach.

Eight Sleep: Fixing What Happens After You Fall Asleep

Eight Sleep is a mattress cover + pod combo that intelligently adjusts your sleep environment in real time. Your comfort and support stay the same, since the mattress doesn’t change at all. If I had to go through all this again with an entirely new mattress, I likely never would have tried it. Instead, it slips over whatever mattress you already have, which is just what I set out looking for when I first realized that Helix’s GlacioTex cover wasn’t cutting it.

The biggest draw here is the automatic temperature adjustment. Instead of asking you to set a predefined temperature that it maintains (or even defining a preset schedule), it uses biometric tracking to respond to your body throughout the night, constantly adjusting the temperature and keeping it at an optimal level. No waking up slightly too warm and kicking a leg out from under the blanket, no fighting with your pillow for a few degrees of coolness, and no shifting around trying to get comfortable again without fully waking up.

What’s really neat is that the tracking ties in with the Autopilot subscription to learn my sleep habits over time and continually work to improve them. It also makes all this data available to me so that I can check out my sleep information myself without ever needing a wearable.

What I didn’t expect until I got ready to order it was the anti-snore feature via its optional adjustable base. If the Pod detects me snoring, it gently raises my head to open my airway and reduce or stop snoring entirely, keeping both me and my partner asleep.

So Do You Need One, the Other, or Both?

If you need to fix your foundation, Helix sells excellent mattresses and provides a very tailored way to determine which one is best for your body. If your problem is that you’re a particularly hot sleeper, you want rich insights into your sleep habits, or you’re interested in a clever way to keep yourself from snoring your partner awake, Eight Sleep is a very effective solution that works with your current mattress.

That’s really what this comes down to. Helix gets the basics right, and Eight Sleep steps in when the basics aren’t the issue anymore. It’s not so much about which product is “better” but which one is addressing your specific problem. Of course, there’s definitely a subset of sleepers who would really benefit from both products, and if you’re part of that group, you can’t go wrong with this combo.
