After celebrating the retirement of my husband’s five-year-old CPAP, my heart absolutely sank when I found out I was developing mild sleep apnea too. I was dreading the possibility of having to get my own Darth Vader mask, so the idea of a daytime treatment was a godsend to me.
The eXciteOSA is a clinically tested and FDA-cleared treatment for sleep apnea that you use for 20 minutes a day. The idea of sending electrical pulses up my tongue was definitely shocking to me at first, but I saw too many glowing reviews to write it off — and I’m glad I didn’t. And with a 90-day money-back guarantee, there was nothing to lose.
So after six weeks, here’s my eXciteOSA review.
Purchasing the Device
I bought my unit from Spring Sleep, the official distributor of the eXciteOSA. I bring it up because apparently, there was another company behind the technology that was based in the UK and Spring Sleep is an American company that’s taken over sales and distribution. This is a win, however, since my main hesitation came from some older reviews that had problems with the other company — issues that don’t seem to exist with Spring Sleep.
Because the device required a prescription, I needed to first book a virtual appointment with one of their specialists. It was quick and painless, and after reviewing my symptoms and medical history, they were able to write a prescription. They even followed up with me a few days later to make sure I was able to get what I needed.
The unit shipped right away, arriving at my doorstep in a matter of days.
The eXciteOSA Experience
Using the eXciteOSA was an interesting experience, to say the least. The way it works is by stimulating the tongue with harmless electrical pulses for 20 minutes, training your tongue to keep from collapsing backward and closing off your upper airway during sleep.
It’s almost like if you took a swig of soda and just held it on your tongue — except the carbonation never dies, and it’s also bubbling inside your tongue somehow. It’s hard to explain exactly how it feels, but it’s definitely not painful or anything.
However, I don’t think it’s something that many people can multitask with. I tried working while using it, and it didn’t go well at all. Even if you don’t need to talk, the buzzing sensation and the inevitable drool (get a towel bib) were enough to distract me from work.
My solution? Netflix.
For the first few sessions, my tongue actually felt tired afterward, which was a new sensation for me. Thankfully, the companion app lets you adjust the intensity level, which I was able to increase over time.
Now that I’ve hit the six-week mark, I’m shifting into maintenance mode — which for me is twice a week instead of daily. I’m rather used to the sensation now, but I like that I don’t have to keep doing it every day.
Results So Far
The eXciteOSA is not a silver bullet that stops sleep apnea completely, but it’s definitely not a gimmick either.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed more consistent deep sleep segments on my sleep tracker. I’m waking up fewer times during the night, my mornings are better, I’m less groggy, and I’m not crashing as hard in the afternoon. For something that doesn’t involve masks, hoses, or sleeping with something in my mouth, that’s a huge win.
The biggest confirmation came from my kids, who are basically the household snore police. They’re the first to notice if I start rumbling like a freight train because I closed my eyes on the couch for 30 seconds. Lately, they haven’t been nudging me awake nearly as often.
What I Liked
- Daytime usage: I love that this isn’t something you wear to bed. I don’t have to worry about waking up tangled in gear, and I don’t feel suffocated — I just build it into my day.
- A gradual, noticeable improvement: It’s not an immediate, dramatic transformation, but I’m genuinely sleeping better. Longer stretches, less snoring, and better mornings.
- Great customer service: Even though I had connection issues early on, the support team was patient and stuck with me until it worked.
- Ease of use and maintenance: The app walks you through everything, start to finish. After you’re done, you just rinse the mouthpiece, let it dry, and plug in the main unit (bonus points for the magnetic charger).
- Portability: It’s so easy to travel with. All I need to pack is a box that’s small enough to fit in my purse.
What I Didn’t
- The drool: There’s no way around it… you’re going to drool. It is what it is, and it’s just something to get used to.
- The price: The eXciteOSA is a significant investment at $1,650 (they offer a 10% discount if you subscribe to their newsletter, though!). You’ll also need to replace the mouthpieces every 90 days for safety ($150 a pop), but you can save with an auto-purchase subscription there. However, it’s worth noting that the device is both FSA- and HSA-eligible!
I’m Keeping Space in My Nightstand for the eXciteOSA
Six weeks in, I’m genuinely glad I tried eXciteOSA.
The weird tongue tingling and the drool? It’s all worth it for the progress that I’ve noticed. My snoring is down, my deep sleep is up, and I don’t turn into a zombie halfway through the day.
It’s also worth noting that the device is primarily meant for mild sleep apnea. If you have moderate to severe sleep apnea, this won’t replace medical treatment or CPAP, and it’s best to talk to a doctor first.
If you’re on the fence, here’s my takeaway: it’s not magic, but it’s undeniably effective.
