What Is a Bed Cooling System?
A bed cooling system is a device or a setup that’s designed to regulate sleep temperature and keep your bed (and you!) cool. It uses air, water, or special cooling materials to prevent overheating and night sweats.
Some systems are high-tech with app controls and dual-zone settings, while others are passive and just use breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics. They’re great for hot sleepers, people who live in warm climates, or anyone wanting to improve sleep quality through better temperature control.
How Do Bed Cooling Systems Work?
Bed cooling systems will usually use airflow, water circulation, or phase-change materials to draw heat away from your body or keep the mattress surface cool.
There are a few types:
- Air-based systems (like BedJet) blow cool or warm air under your sheets.
- Water-based systems (like Eight Sleep and Chilipad) circulate cooled or heated water through tubes in a mattress pad.
- Passive systems (like cooling mattress protectors) use breathable, moisture-wicking, or temperature-regulating materials and fabrics designed to disperse heat without using any electronics.
Why Use a Bed Cooling System?
Sleep quality is tied directly to sleeping temperature. If you’ve woken up from being so miserably overheated, you already know this well.
So, how does a bed cooling system combat that and lead to more restful sleep? A bed cooling system:
- Prevents overheating and night sweats for more restful, uninterrupted sleep
- Supports your body’s natural cooling process, helping you fall asleep faster
- Improves sleep quality and depth, especially for hot sleepers or folks in warm climates
- Reduces the need to blast the AC, which can save energy and money
- Creates personalized sleep climates, great for couples with different temperature preferences
- Relieves symptoms of menopause, hot flashes, or medical conditions that cause heat sensitivity
How I Chose These Bed Cooling Systems
When I was looking for the best bed cooling systems, I focused on comfort, actual performance, and practical features that improve your sleep. These picks are chosen based on what works for different kinds of sleepers, lifestyles, and budgets.
- Effective temperature control- I looked for systems that had consistent cooling or temperature regulation mentioned on multiple real-world user reviews, not just their own marketing claims.
- User-friendly design- The best systems are easy to set up and adjust, and low-maintenance, so they don’t add more stress to your nighttime routine.
- Real, proven sleep benefits- I prioritized systems backed by sleep science, thousands of positive reviews, or features like smart sensors and dual-zone controls that actively improve sleep quality
- Options for different budgets- Whether you want a fancy, smart sleep setup or just need an affordable, breathable mattress upgrade, I found options that are worth it at every price point.
- Durability and quality- Every pick had to be made from high-quality materials and built to withstand nightly use for years, so you’re not spending a ton of money on something that will stop working within a year.
My Picks for the Best Bed Cooling Systems
1. Eight Sleep Pod 5
Best overall smart cooling system
First up and best overall is the Pod 5 Core from Eight Sleep.
This high-tech, smart sleep setup comes complete with a cover that goes over your mattress (kind of like a mattress cover or protector does) and a hub that sits beside your bed. This one uses a network of tubes that circulate cooled or heated water through the mattress cover to keep you sleeping at the perfect temperature all night.
It’s one of the more advanced setups here, as it pairs with an app called Autopilot that allows you to control each side of the bed (great for couples that sleep at different temperatures) while tracking your overall sleep health. Autopilot also tracks your biometrics during the night and automatically adjusts the Pod’s temperature accordingly. You do have to download and pay for a subscription to the app.
The cover also features a vibrational and thermal alarm to wake you up from your restful sleep in an effective yet gentle way. While on the pricier side, this Pod is a complete solution for restful sleep.
Price: $3,049 for a Queen plus $17-$33 per month for app
2. BedJet 3
Best adjustable cooling airflow system
If you’d rather try an air-based system, check out the BedJet3. It uses rapid air circulation to wick away not only heat but also moisture and humidity, while also offering warmth when you want it, making it a year-round solution for sleeping temperature regulation.
Personalized biorhythm sleep settings offer a high-end sleep tech, allowing you to control temperature, air flow, and auto-shutoff for each individual side of the bed from your phone or the included remote. And unlike water-based systems, BedJet actually pulls humidity out of the bed for advanced temperature and moisture control.
It’s much more affordable than water-based options, and the hub is small enough to fit under your bed, so nothing bulky by your nightstand, either. While it’s pretty quiet (no louder than a fan), it does get louder at higher air-pressure settings, so be aware of that.
Price: $699 for a unit that fits any size bed
3. Chilipad Dock Pro by sleepme
Best water-based cooling control
Another water-based, dual-sided bed cooling system that’s gotten plenty of praise from the internet is the Chilipad Dock Pro by Sleepme. This is another system so small it fits under your bed.
Controlled via Sleepme app or on-device controls, this bed cooling system can cool all the way down to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. You can preset temperature adjustments ahead of time, so your bed cools and warms while you sleep.
The big sell on this one is that the pad itself has no electrical connections or wires, so no EMFs (electromagnetic fields). You can enable “Airplane Mode” to reduce EMFs from the Dock Pro.
You have the option to add on the Sleep Tracker to your Chilipad Dock Pro for “real-time, personalized temperature adjustments based on your sleep metrics,” allowing for even more customizable sleep temperature control.
I also like that this one gives you the option to buy only a half-mattress size.
Price: $1,199 for a half-mattress pad for a Queen, $2,199 for a full mattress pad
4. Eight Sleep Pod 5 Ultra
Best splurge
If you don’t mind dropping some cash to get the best night’s sleep you’ve ever had, you’re not going to find better than the Eight Sleep Pod 5 Ultra.
This bed system starts with what the Pod 5 offers, then steps it up quite a few notches. It comes with the Hub, Cover, Base, and option to add a hydro-powered cooling blanket for a completely luxurious sleeping experience.
It also has features designed into the base (which is designed to fit into your existing bed frame). This includes customizable elevation settings that offer users back pressure relief and snoring mitigation for each side. There are even surround sound speakers located in the base to play music or lead you through guided meditation.
The optional hydro-powered cooling blanket creates a fully immersive temperature-regulating system for an additional $1,000. (Remember, this is the splurge option of the list!)
Price: $5,049 for a Queen setup, plus $1,050 for an optional cooling blanket, plus $17-$33 per month for app
5. The Smart Topper from Perfectly Snug
Best subtle, all-night airflow cooling
Another airflow-based system, the Perfectly Snug Smart Topper, is a great, easy-to-set-up option that makes some scientific claims.
It claims to remove up to 122 watts of body heat (over 50% more than leading water-based competitors), working effectively even in rooms as hot as 80°F.
Smart sensors adjust heating and cooling automatically throughout the night to maintain your ideal sleep temperature. If you would rather manually control the temperature, you can do that, too, using the physical buttons for dual-zone controls.
The Smart Topper’s patented 3D airflow design pushes heat and humidity out of your body without creating condensation or raising your room temperature. If you’re a seriously sweaty sleeper, the Smart Topper will keep you cool and dry all night long.
Price: $1,899 for Queen-sized dual-zone cooling topper
6. Eight Sleep Pod 4
Best value smart cooling system
If Eight Sleep is the goal and you love the idea of all the smart tech, but you can’t quite afford the $4,000 price tag of some of their other options, check out the Eight Sleep Pod 4.
It still comes with all of the smart tech (Autopilot, the app, dual-zoned temperature control, cooling, and heating via a hub) but with slightly outdated tech and a few less cool tricks.
It doesn’t have the ability to connect with the Eight Sleep blanket, and it doesn’t offer a thermal and vibration alarm, so you’ll have to spring for the higher-end offerings from Eight Sleep if you want those bells and whistles. Still, it has a very similar setup to the Pod 5, making it a great value compared to Eight Sleep’s other pods.
Price: $2,649 plus $17-$33 per month for app
7. Brooklinen Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector
Best cooling mattress protector
If you’re looking for the most affordable way to lower your body temperature at night and you can’t fork over hundreds (or thousands) of dollars, check out the Brooklinen Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector.
While this isn’t technically a bed cooling system, it’s a mattress protector with serious cooling properties. It uses high-tech PE fibers that feel smooth and cool to the touch, so it won’t give you that creepy, squeaky feeling that you get from cheap mattress protectors.
This cover gives sleepers hypoallergenic, water-resistant protection without noise or shifting around, making it practical, comfortable, and cooling.
All you have to do to care for it is toss it in the washer and dryer. And while it doesn’t use technology to regulate your bed temperature, it does protect the longevity of your mattress.
Price: $129 for a Queen mattress protector
So, Which Bed Cooling System Is Best?
Which bed cooling system is best depends on your preferences and needs.
If you want the smartest, most high-tech solution for sleep temperature control, the Eight Sleep Pod 5 Core is the best all-around choice, with the Pod 5 Ultra a great splurge-worthy upgrade. For flexible airflow and year-round comfort at a lower price (below $1,000), go with the BedJet 3.
If you only need to regulate temperature on your side of the bed, the Chilipad Dock Pro offers amazing temperature control without EMFs in a half-mattress size. And if you’re on a budget, the Brooklinen Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector gives you a cool, breathable upgrade for just around $100.
