As someone who struggles with sleeping cool and often wakes up in a puddle of sweat, finding cooling bedding has become non-negotiable. Luckily, it’s no secret that there are better options available for keeping us cool during the night than there used to be. These days there are all kinds of cooling sheets, comforters, duvets, pillowcases, and even beds.
I’ve recently been looking to invest in a cooling comforter, and there are two brands with comforters designed specifically for hot sleepers that I’m deciding between: Miracle Made and Mellow.
The more I looked into them, the more I found that Miracle Made’s cooling comforter and Mellow’s dual-sided cooling comforter are two similar, formidable opponents. So, if both are meant to keep us cool at night, how do we decide which one is best? And honestly, what’s the difference?
The Essence of a Cooling Comforter
The word “cooling” is not just for marketing. It indicates that there is specific technology within the layers of the comforter that makes it cooler than conventional bedding. Cooling comforters have features that can include moisture-wicking, breathability, a high Qmax rating (how the material shifts heat away from the skin), phase-change materials (PCMs) that are known to give the “cooling sensation” you feel when your skin makes contact with the comforter, and a lightweight fill that keeps the body from overheating.
There are two parts of a comforter: the outer shell and the inner fill. Sometimes comforters will be called dual-sided to ensure we know that the top of the outer shell is diverse in feel from the bottom, meaning each side has a different feel and level of coolness.
The Benefits to Sleeping Cooler
Sleep science suggests that when bedroom temperature rises even a degree as you sleep, it can affect how efficient sleep becomes. The length of time you stay asleep can even change. Heat exposure is also linked to less time in REM sleep. Believe it or not, when our core body temperature drops between one or two degrees, it helps begin and maintain our sleep process.
Although sleep studies with different fibers are limited, there are studies that propose cooler bedding does lead to improved sleep quality. Bedding of course cannot change the temperature in a hot room, but it can substantially improve comfort for hot sleepers. So, sleeping cooler can result in improved sleep!
Now let’s check out two comforters that could help with your journey to cooler sleep.

The Tech in Depth
The cool-to-the-touch part of any bedding refers to the Qmax rating, which is the rate of how quickly heat transfers from the skin to the fabric. It may not sound like much, but anything higher than 0.2 indicates that the product is cool-to-the-touch, feeling increasingly cooler as the Qmax rates higher. It’s worth it to note that Mellow’s Qmax rating is said to be more than 0.45, and Miracle Made’s is said to be about the same at 0.4. This means you can expect their comforters to stay cooler longer than conventional bedding.
PCMs, mentioned earlier, can also be part of cooling and regulating temperature. They essentially absorb the heat off your body as it melts and then release the heat when it begins to re-solidify, which creates a cooling sensation. Further, PCMs are able to stay cool past the first touch or first contact with skin, which also improves your chances of staying cool throughout the night. Both Mellow and Miracle Made use PCMs in their comforters along with other cooling technology (I’ll say more on that soon) to make them more moisture-wicking and breathable.
Something to note: Miracle Made does not have a specific active thermal cooling technology the way Mellow does; rather its cooling is based on fiber construction for those who overheat quickly.
OEKO-TEX Certification
Both Miracle Made and Mellow are both OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. In the production world, this is a huge deal because there are tons of toxic chemicals out there currently being used in a plethora of products (including bedding) that shouldn’t be anywhere near people. OEKO-TEX has three different types of certifications: Made in Green, Standard 100, and Organic Cotton.
Made in Green means the product is sustainably sourced and tested for harmful substances. Standard 100 sets the benchmark for textile safety and is tested from the yarn to the finished product. Last but not least, the Organic label certifies from farm to product for testing of harmful chemicals, is organic, and has been tested for GMOs.
Mellow: Overview
The first thing I read about Mellow is that their cooling comforter is dual-sided. One side of the comforter is composed of their silky-cool Arctic Silk, and the other is breathable CloudKnit. This makes a difference because if I do end up cold, I can easily flip it over. I like the idea of being able to experience cooling and being wrapped up in a fluffy cloud-like blanket at the same time.
When it comes to PCMs, Mellow uses HeatLock, CoolWick, and their Naia fibers, which make their comforter ideal for any season. HeatLock targets insulation for one side of the comforter, while CoolWick (on the other side) is meant to manage moisture. Naia fibers are made from sustainably sourced wood pulp and are the reason behind the comforter being able to absorb and then release moisture while being quick-drying, maintain a silky-feel, and be hypoallergenic. This is a great combination for hot sleepers because we can stay comfortable during any time of year, no matter the season.
Mellow’s biggest positive for me is their color variety: Their comforter comes in 13 different colors. A wide variety means a lot to those of us who want everything to go with the color scheme we probably already have going on. The downside is that it makes it tough for indecisive personalities (guilty). The pattern on the comforter is largely plain with some scallop-esque shapes throughout.
Currently, Mellow is also offering two bundles with their CloudAlign pillows—one or two, respectively—at a slightly higher price. Bundling could be worth it if you’re in need of new pillows, too!
Miracle Made: Overview
Miracle Made has three color choices in their diamond quilted pattern and features three layers (top, bottom, fill) to create their breathable, lightweight comforter. Similarly to Mellow, Miracle Made’s cooling comforter is dual-sided, too. One side is meant to be smooth and cozy, while the other side feels cool to the touch.
Miracle Made specifically targets hygiene and freshness between washes, which is a departure from Mellow’s approach. The biggest disparity is that Miracle Made’s comforter is silver-treated. But what does that mean, and how does silver help with keeping bedding fresh? This was actually quite interesting to read up on.
Miracle Made makes very clear that the silver treatment of their bedding does not contribute to the cooling aspect but rather helps manage bacteria. This occurs when the silver ions come into contact with bacteria on fabric (from sweat, skin oils, and body heat). They disrupt the bacterial cell membrane and prevent colonization at the fiber surface. Thus, the silver that is woven into the fabric of their products is said to help reduce 99.7% of odor-causing bacteria.
The cooling part of their comforter comes from the way the textile is woven and the choice in fiber: a Jersey-knit outer shell with conductive fiber blends. These together assist with temperature regulation based on how the fabric is able to manage heat transfer and moisture. To understand how it works within the context of Miracle Made’s comforter, it’s important to know that Jersey is not a specific fiber but rather how the fabric is structured. The way Jersey performs within the world of cooling depends on things like yarn, fiber, climate, density, grams per square meter, and finishing. When constructed to be lightweight (like in this case), Jersey becomes breathable, allows for airflow, and is quick-drying.
Currently, Miracle Made also offers a three-piece towel set for free with purchase of a comforter.
Care Instructions
As a mom, I do not have time to hang-dry, handwash, or take a bunch of extra steps every day when doing laundry. The great thing about both of these comforters is that they are easy to care for and are machine washable.
Mellow is both fully machine washable and dryer safe. They do not mention any further care instructions, but washing with similar colors is probably a good idea if you’re getting a lighter-colored comforter.
Because Miracle Made’s comforter is silver-treated, they recommend not using fabric softener or harsh chemicals like bleach and just using a mild detergent. You’ll want to wash with similar colors and tumble-dry on low. They also suggest not washing with items that have zippers, hooks, or hardware that could cause snags, but this is likely wise advice for washing any bedding or blankets.
Shipping, Returns, and Coverage
In terms of shipping, there’s just a day’s difference between brands: Mellow products typically ship within three to seven business days, while Miracle Made ships within four to seven business days.
Returns and warranties, on the other hand, are quite different for each.
Miracle Made offers the chance to try their comforter risk-free for 100 days with free returns within 100 days of delivery. Their shipping is also free on all standard U.S. orders. The only time shipping costs would have to be paid is if you’re fully returning. They do have a limited two-year warranty on select products, but it unfortunately does not cover their comforters.
Although Mellow only offers a 30-day return window, they do offer a lifetime warranty. But as great as that sounds, this particular warranty has a catch and is very particular regarding what it covers. There is a $20 fee per covered item (select items only) that includes a warranty on manufacturing defects so long as you are the original purchaser—you must have the original item packaging and associated documentation. There is also a $15 processing fee when returning.
Closing Thoughts
The whole point of buying a cooling comforter is to have cooler, improved sleep. If you’re like me and you’ve suffered long enough with night sweats and sleeping hot, then you’ve found yourself in the right place to research comforters made to keep us cool.
Choose Miracle Made if you’d like a hygienic, silver-treated, cooling comforter that stays fresher between washes. Mellow is a contender if color variety and a cooling cloud-like feel is more what you’re looking for. Both comforters would likely be successful in terms of delivering cooler sleep; it just depends on your specific preferences.
Here’s to hoping that every hot sleeper has the chance to finally sleep cool!
