Our Editorial Guidelines: How We Test and Review

Welcome! We want you to know everything about us: our background, how we fund our work, how we create content, and how we make editorial choices.

Sleep Solutions HQ upholds a high standard of integrity across all of its editorial content, including reviews, comparisons, and guides. Our recommendations are based on evidence (not trends or social media influence), and we approach every topic with a reader-first mindset that is objective.

The use of generative AI is prohibited at Sleep Solutions HQ. This policy extends not only to articles produced by our writing team but also to the images and video content‌ that we create. Photographs may be edited minimally to crop, improve contrast/color, add text, or create a collage.

We prioritize real-world performance over marketing claims, combining multiple sources of information to ensure depth and accuracy:

  • Hands-on product testing whenever applicable for product reviews, comparisons, and category roundups
  • Reputable sleep science research and expert-backed insights when applicable
  • Verified manufacturer specifications
  • Aggregated customer feedback trends (analyzed, not cherry-picked)

All content is written by members of our writing team. We do not publish product reviews written by affiliated parties, nor do we accept guest posts.

Our editorial and testing team includes researchers, writers, and product testers with experience in:

  • Sleep products and mattress evaluation
  • Consumer product testing
  • Health and wellness research
  • Sleeping, in general, since we all do it!

We prioritize subject familiarity and hands-on experience when creating content.

All writing team members are required to disclose potential conflicts of interest.

Product endorsements are based on our team’s research and personal experience. We do not guarantee positive reviews or recommendations, even when a brand supplies a product for testing or consideration.

Sleep Solutions HQ provides informational content only, and we do not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment for sleep disorders. Our content should not replace consultation with a licensed healthcare provider, and when relevant, we encourage readers to seek professional guidance.

Sleep products and technology are evolving quickly, so we regularly review and update existing content, re-evaluate our product recommendations, and adjust rankings based on new testing or data. We aim to keep all content current, accurate, and above all, useful to the reader.

How We Test Products & Services

We take a practical, real-world approach to product testing, and our goal is simple: To understand how a product actually performs in everyday sleep environments, not just how it’s marketed, and relay that to potential consumers.

We evaluate a wide range of sleep-related products, including:

  • Mattresses
  • Pillows
  • Bedding (sheets, comforters, mattress toppers)
  • Sleep technology (cooling systems, trackers, smart beds)
  • Sleep aids and accessories

Our Hands-On Testing Process

Whenever possible, products are tested personally by at least one member of our team, although we sometimes involve two or more team members for consensus and wider insight. We do, at our discretion, sometimes test competitor products for in-depth comparison evaluations.

Mattresses

Mattresses are tested over multiple weeks to evaluate:

  • Comfort and pressure relief
  • Firmness accuracy vs. advertised feel
  • Motion isolation
  • Edge support
  • Temperature regulation (if applicable)
  • Setup difficulty
  • Off-gassing
  • Break-in period
  • Initial impressions (first few nights) and extended use observations

Whenever possible, we evaluate across different scenarios that include sleeping positions (side, back, stomach), temperature preferences (hot vs. cool sleepers), body types and weight ranges, single-sleepers and couples.

Pillows

When testing pillows, our team evaluates:

  • Loft and adjustability
  • Shape retention over time
  • Neck and spine alignment
  • Heat retention

Sleep Technology & Accessories

Eight Sleep Vs. BedJe

Evaluation criteria vary based on the specific product (and what it does), but can include:

  • Ease of setup
  • Usability
  • App experience
  • Reliability
  • Relative accuracy of data
  • Impact on sleep quality

Bedding

When evaluating bedding, we rate and consider:

  • Material quality
  • Breathability and temperature control
  • Durability (including wash and wear testing)
  • Comfort
  • All aspects relative to price
  • Potential allergens (such as latex or wool)

Scoring And Evaluation

We never rank products based on commissions and don’t repeat manufacturer claims without independent validation. Our recommendations are based on a combination of hands-on testing, comparative analysis, and research with supporting data.

Every product we test is evaluated using a structured, category-specific framework designed to examine real-world performance. When possible, we test and compare against similar products.

Our core evaluation criteria includes:

  • Performance (how well the product delivers on its primary purpose)
  • Comfort and usability (how the product feels and/or functions)
  • Build quality and materials (the quality and durability of its construction)
  • Temperature regulation (if applicable)
  • Value for money (whether the product justifies its price)
  • Brand policies and support (including trial periods, returns, warranty, and customer support)

We avoid over-relying on a single numeric score because the “best” option is rarely universal. (One person’s “dream” mattress is another person’s nightmare.) Instead, we explain a product’s strengths and weaknesses, specific use-case recommendations, and trade-offs to consider before buying.

Performance is always the starting point. Every product makes promises (cooler sleep, better support, deeper rest), and our job is to pressure-test those claims. We’re less interested in the features list and much more focused on the outcomes.

  1. Did that cooling mattress actually sleep cool or only feel that way for ten minutes?
  2. Did that pillow keep my neck aligned, or did it fall flat halfway through the night?
  3. Did this sleep tech actually improve my sleep or just give me a bunch of data?

Comfort and usability come into play, as well. A product can technically “perform” just fine… but be annoying to use. This is where we look deeply into real-life experience.

  1. How did it feel at first, and how did it feel after a full night?
  2. Was there a break-in period (and was it worth it)?
  3. Was setup easy, or was the assembly nightmare fuel?
  4. Is the app intuitive, or was I yelling at my screen at midnight instead of falling asleep?

Really, all of that ‌comes down to: Am I happy I got this?

The build quality and materials are considered closely because sleep products aren’t (usually) cheap and they definitely shouldn’t feel disposable. We examine the construction (right down to the stitches), the durability, and whether the materials match what’s being advertised.

We also watch for early signs of wear, including loss of support/structure, sagging, or flattening over time. If something feels great for the first week but degrades quickly, we’ll call it out.

Temperature regulation is another point we evaluate closely, especially if a product is being marketed as “cooling.” We evaluate whether the product actively reduces heat or just avoids trapping it, and how it performs over a full night (and not just within the first five or ten minutes of contact).

We consider the cost, as well, to determine if what you get with the product is worth the price tag attached. In our experience, the “best” product isn’t always the most expensive… it’s the one that delivers the most reliable sleep improvement per dollar.

Finally (and a lot of people don’t really think about this until the moment they need it), we look at what happens after you click “buy.” Is the trial period legit? Are returns easy? Is the warranty meaningful and what does it cover? Is customer support responsive?

At the end of the day (or night, rather), we’re never trying to crown a universal “winner” through our reviews. We’re trying to help you understand:

  • What this product does well
  • Where it falls short
  • Whether it fits your sleep style

And if that gets you closer to a decision that’ll lead to better and more restful sleep, then we’ve done our job.
