Mattress shopping (especially online) is one of those experiences that starts out exciting but quickly devolves the moment they all start looking like 39 versions of the same bed on your screen.
My husband and I were recently floating in that same boat. Ours was crafted from memory foam, and although I was comfortable (enough) as a stomach and side sleeper, my back-and-side-sleeping husband was really struggling to get a decent night’s rest. I did a lot of research and figured out that a hybrid mattress would probably do him a solid. After shopping and discussing options for what felt like forever, it turns out I was right.
We got the Helix Midnight Luxe a few weeks ago, and after the first night, I wondered why we didn’t make that change sooner. I’ll share everything about our experience with this mattress (including the unboxing and setup), how it feels in every sleeping position, the pros and cons to consider, and who it’s actually best for.
What is the Helix Midnight Luxe?
The Helix Midnight Luxe is a hybrid mattress that balances comfortable support with pressure relief by combining layers of dense foam with innerspring coil support.
Features of the Helix Midnight Luxe
- Extra reinforcement across the hip and shoulder areas relieves pressure points while supporting your spine, especially if you’re a side sleeper.
- Several dense foam layers just beneath the pillow top work together to cushion and cradle your body.
- The firmness level is a perfect middle ground: soft and cozy but with enough support that you don’t sink in deeply.
- Enhanced reinforcement along the edges makes for a comfortable sitting experience along the sides.
- Includes a standard Tencel cover that’s smooth and breathable, but optional upgrades are available, together or separately. The GlacioTex cooling cover draws heat away from the surface of the mattress; the CoolForce layer pulls heat away from your body; the ErgoAlign layer is designed for lower back pain relief.
- The Helix Midnight Luxe ships for free within the contiguous US, and there is a 120-night trial with an exchange or free return available if needed.
- Sizes offered include Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Short Queen, and RV King.
My Hands-On Experience with the Helix Midnight Luxe
First Impressions
I’ll be honest: I was watching my FedEx tracking like a hawk because I wasn’t sure how the delivery would go (and whether the guy would need help to bring it to my door). Those fears were unfounded; he had a dolly.
That said, it was a good thing I had one, too, because he didn’t bring it up onto the porch, and my bedroom is also on the second floor. The box was heavy and I was really curious to see how the bed would unfold… literally, and figuratively.
Taking it out of the box, the mattress was rolled up snugger than a bug in a really tight plastic rug.
We soon figured out that the easiest way to unwrap it was to pull the plastic from the underside and roll the mattress away from ourselves across the slatted frame, repeating that movement over and over.
This took a few minutes (because there are several layers of it, burrito-style), but the method worked really well. You don’t want to go after the thing with scissors.
Once that was removed, the mattress started to “hiss” as it inflated a little, so we pulled the rest of the plastic off it and positioned it on the bed.
We unboxed and set the mattress up around 3 in the afternoon, giving it about nine hours to expand and settle before we actually went to bed (around midnight). And this might sound like TMI, but the moment my husband laid in it for the first time, he was making some happy grunty noises that sounded like something else was happening over there…
Turns out he was just really comfortable.
So was I, in fact. I sat in bed for a long while, reading on my Kindle as I often do, and the difference in the support of the Helix Midnight Luxe was really obvious right away. I hadn’t realized how often our old mattress made me shift to get into a comfortable position until I wasn’t doing it every five minutes.
The First Night Sleeping on the Helix Midnight Luxe
My husband and I both have Apple Watches with sleep tracking data built in, and personally, I’ve been trying to get better at remembering to wear mine. (I have a terrible habit of leaving the thing on the charger overnight, which then turns into days, but I digress.)
I made a point of wearing mine during our first night of sleep on the Helix because beyond sharing insights into overall comfort and my experience later on, I wanted to back it up with “hard” data if I could.
My husband’s average sleep score on our old memory foam mattress was anywhere from 70 to 85 most nights. He scored a 96 the first night sleeping on the Helix and woke up beaming about how good he felt.
I didn’t really have an average sleep score to reference, but I managed an 87 that first night. Which is pretty good for me, considering that I almost always stay up way too late reading or playing video games. We all have our vices, right? That’s mine. I own it. I like fighting dragons on the TV.
One thing I noticed (the next morning) was how much more quickly I fell asleep on the Helix Midnight Luxe. I’m someone who normally takes at least a half an hour to fall asleep once I’m in bed (and often up to an hour or more) because I’m burrowing, I’m shifting, I’m fussing around getting comfortable and settled. But on this mattress, I got into my typical “mountain climber” stomach/side sleeping position and… aside from thinking how comfortable it was against my body right after I laid down, I don’t really remember much after that.
And that’s a good thing.
In The Weeks Following
I might be oblivious to such things, but I never really experienced the “breaking in” period people often warn you about with mattresses (boxed or not). The comfort of the Helix Midnight Luxe has been consistent from the first night onward. The support and pressure relief are incredible, and especially for my husband, that’s had a really positive impact not just on his sleep scores but how rested he is and how he feels, physically.
I’m still falling asleep much faster than I used to, and these days, the only reason I struggle to get out of bed is because I’m so comfortable I don’t want to leave it.
Although it has motion isolation, I do notice a little more movement from my husband than I used to, but it isn’t enough to disturb me, and I’m really only aware of it if I’m awake reading. (Our old memory foam mattress was like sleeping on a brick… so that experience probably affected my perception of movement and motion.)
How the Helix Midnight Luxe Feels in Different Sleeping Positions
I mentioned earlier how my husband is more of a back and side sleeper, and I’m a stomach and side sleeper. The Helix Midnight Luxe is one of the most adaptable beds in that regard, and it works well for both of us.
“I relax instantly when I lay down, fall asleep immediately, and wake up with zero soreness whether I’ve slept on my side or my back,” he said.
Side Sleeping
The Helix Midnight Luxe is practically built for side sleepers:
- You get a gentle sink at the hips and shoulders to relieve pressure in those areas specifically.
- The pillow top cradles your whole body from shoulder to toes and just feels “so damned nice,” according to my husband.
- Spinal alignment stays true, so you’re supported while also being cushioned as it contours around you.
Back Sleeping
I’m not a back sleeper at all (unless I’m doing a morning starfish in the center of the bed after my husband gets out of it), so these insights are his.
- The mattress fills in against your lower back for comfort.
- You feel more “on top” of the mattress compared to side sleeping, more like you’re lifted. In his words, it’s “like I’m floating on air.”
- There’s still plenty of cushioning around the rest of your body, and it’s plush but supportive.
Stomach Sleeping
These insights are all mine; I don’t think I’ve ever seen my husband sleep on his stomach in the 25 years we’ve been married.
- There is a lot of even support through the chest, hips, and legs, with a soft pillow feel against your whole body.
- Sleeping in “mountain climber” pose, my hip sinks gently, and the support is pretty similar to what you’d feel lying on your side.
- I don’t experience any back curvature or misalignment when I’m sleeping on my stomach in the Helix.
Pros & Cons of the Helix Midnight Luxe
Although I love my Helix Midnight Luxe, it has its share of pros and cons to consider before you buy.
Helix Midnight Luxe Pros:
- Fantastic pressure relief (especially for side sleepers) with enhanced support at the shoulder and hip
- Very balanced feel with a soft and plush pillow top, but deeply supportive underneath
- Strong edge support (which is something my husband very much appreciates because he can sit on the edge of the bed and not sink down)
- Much more premium feel compared to standard boxed mattresses
- Has thick and sturdy handles on either side of the mattress for moving and/or positioning
Helix Midnight Luxe Cons:
- Not ideal if you prefer a very firm or very soft mattress, since it’s squarely in the middle between the two
- Heavier than average (a dolly is a huge help when it arrives boxed, and moving it will require two people once it’s unboxed)
- Higher price point compared to some basic hybrid mattresses
Who Should Get The Helix Midnight Luxe?
I think the Helix Midnight Luxe is a great fit if:
- You’re a side sleeper, or side-and-back sleeper (although if you’re a full-time back sleeper, you may want to consider adding the ErgoAlign Layer for optimal back support).
- You like a bed surface that’s soft and plush, but still has a supportive feel that you don’t sink deeply into.
- You share a bed and need a hybrid mattress that isolates motion.
- You often sit along the side of the bed and need firmer edge support.
This mattress might not be your ideal match if:
- You like having an ultra-firm, “sleeping on a plank” kind of feel.
- You prefer a super soft mattress that you sink into like a stone.
- You’re working with a smaller budget (in which case, you might consider the Helix Midnight Core).
If you’ve been doing your own research and narrowing down mattress options, there’s a reason you might keep coming back to the Helix Midnight Luxe. After sleeping on one for a while myself, it’s an easy one to recommend if comfort and support are your top priorities.
(And if they aren’t, they should be.)
